Phone Bank Held in Hopes of Repealing DADT
Last Thursday, we hosted our first phone bank of the summer. With the help of Equal at UCF and local Human Rights Campaign Field Organizer, Jess Osborn, just under a dozen of us called voters in Virginia in order to do our part in making sure Don't Ask, Don't Tell is indeed repealed.
People came throughout the day, between classes and lunches, sitting in the Student Union and calling from our cell phones as we reached voters in Virginia, encouraging them to contact Senator Jim Webb. Webb, whose vote seemed to be critical for the repeal, had yet to announce his stance.
The phonebank began at 10 am, with Osborn showing volunteers how to use CallFire, a program the HRC uses to contact voters across the country. Four hours later, we packed up and waited for the news. In the end, the Senate Armed Services Committee voted 16-12 in favor of repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell, with Webb among the twelve dissenters.
We are certain this will not be our last opportunity to make sure the DADT Repeal goes through, and we will make it a point to do our part as usual. Until next time!
